Achieving results through effective communication
Everyday we communicate with other people for the purpose of achieving some type of result.
- Sometimes it goes just fine.
- Sometimes your audience just doesn’t get the message.
- Sometimes you simply can’t win and you may get defensive, perhaps even angry and certainly frustrated.
We gave names to these communication interactions:
- 1st Order Communication is when it goes just fine. These are the people who find you credible, understandable and likeable. You’re communicating effectively with these audiences.
- 2nd Order Communication is when your audience just doesn’t get the message. These are the people who find you credible, but the message isn’t getting through. It may be that you are communicating in the wrong style or syntax, with inappropriate technical complexity or linguistic pattern, or there may be a nonverbal mismatch or other reason. You need help with your communication style.
- 3rd Order Communication is when you simply can’t win if you stay with your 1st Order communication behavior. Your audience doesn’t find you or your institution credible, but you still need to be effective with this audience. 3rd Order Communication requires prior mastery of 1st and 2nd Order situations. 3rd Order communication is a very personal, highly social and extremely flexible model. Done right, it can transform difficult situations into positive experiences for you and your audience.
What does it take to communicate effectively using the 3rd Order model?
For over 25 years, we have studied effective communications in all three Orders. We have found that only a small percentage of scientists, leaders, executives, politicians, teachers, generals and other professionals communicate at the 3rd Order.
- First, you must be a master of your technical content.
- You must then exhibit emotionally intelligent behavior in the 2nd Order.
- Then you need to demonstrate socially intelligent behavior in the 3rd Order in any social situation.
Development in the 3rd Order is limited by your own awareness and ability to master social cognition. Very few people can master the 3rd Order. We estimate that only 5% of people in North America are capable of such mastery.
